7 March 2012 – In response to consumer demand, Nestle has become the first major confectioner to remove artificial ingredients from its entire confectionery range. This move represents a massive milestone for the industry, and it is likely that other companies will follow suit.
Cadbury removed all artificial colours from its products after the Food Standards Agency published the so-called Southampton study in 2007 that linked six artificial colours with hyperactivity in young children. However, artificial flavourings are still being used.
Mars has removed all artificial colours and flavourings from its chocolate bars. Although, the company still uses additive in other products eg Skittles.
Both Cadbury, Mars and other major confectionery companies are now likely to increase their efforts to remove artificial ingredients. In the foreseeable future I think it is likely that many other companies will be making the same announcement.
